Julie Davidson Smith and Tracy Olan, two Kingston area artists, are inviting you to participate in a women’s weekend of creativity, relaxation and renewal. Thank you Julie for sending this information:
I am thrilled to share with you all that registration is now open for Creative Escape, Women’s Art Camp at Elbow Lake Conservation Area this May 30 & 31st. Local artist Tracy Olan and I have teamed up to design a fabulous creative retreat weekend for women who crave time for their creativity, who long to be in nature and have the time to just be. There is space for 24 women who will be divided into 2 small groups for workshops where woman can focus one day on felting with Tracy and encaustic painting with me the other, each group will have a chance to felt, paint, play and discover. This weekend is for you, a time to go at your own speed, make art furiously or go to your cabin and nap or walk in the woods.
DAY 1: Campers Arrive, Play, Restore & Bloom
– 9am- 9:30 am Check in, grab a cabin, switch into camp mode!
– 10am Opening Circle – Intro to the Weekend
-10:15-12:30, Felting (wooly fun) with Tracy and encaustic art with Julie. One group felts on day 1, the other paints and we switch groups on day 2
-12:30-1:00pm LUNCH SERVED
-1:15 pm Continue Felt making and doing encaustic art
– 3:30 pm Tidy Up and head off for free time! Walk in the woods, head to the beach, read a book, sleep or drink wine (BYOB)
– 4:30-5:15pm OPTIONAL FUN: Join in for a camp craft with Tracy and Julie, something to bring out your inner 5 year old and play.
5:30pm CHOW TIME – We don’t do the cooking but we all have to wash our plates and cup in the sinkJ
-7:00pm OPTIONAL – Nature Walk in the woods with Tracy & Julie
*Please note that you will not have to cook, you will be served delicious snacks and meals throughout the retreat however we all have to take our plate and cups to the sink for a quick wash so we can all help things run smoothly for the cooks.
FREE TIME & Sleeping arrangements:
The rest of the evening is for you. Gather to connect or reflect around a fire or drift off early to your cabin. Each cabin has a deck, small inside common area and two bedrooms, each with a bunk bed. There will be four women per cabin.
Day 2: A Snail’s Pace
Breakfast served between 7:30-9:00am
– 9:00- 9:30am – Set up for felt and encaustic workshops
– 9:30 – 11:30 Felt and encaustic art, groups switch
1:15 – 3:00 Complete Felt and Encaustic Art
3:00pm Tidy up & Closing Circle
Natural materials artist TRACY OLAN brings her love of wool and design together for a one day workshop, where participants explore wet felting techniques using wool and inspiration from nature! Each participant will play with wool from around the world, exploring colour, texture and composition, while gaining hands-on understanding of felt making. This workshop is designed for beginners, but would also serve felting artists of any level who simply needs space and a creative environment to play! Everyone leaves with at least one piece of art.

A painter and creative facilitator for many years Julie brings her passion for the arts and her vision to help inspire people to celebrate their own creative voice. Julie’s well known for her love of beeswax, it is the perfect medium for diving in, letting go and finding a new way to express yourself. This retreat will give you lots of time to explore this medium, combine elements of nature and let you sink into the process.
Payment: It is $325, a $150 deposit is required by Etsy, email transfer or cheque. Full payment by May 9th.
