Hello! My name is Blas Villagomez, and I am a visual artist and illustrator. I recently moved to Belleville from La Paz, Bolivia, in August 2016. I grew up in La Paz, and I started drawing at a young age, before starting school. As a child, I had the opportunity to take classes with Roberto Varcarcel, a well-known contemporary artist in Bolivia. After finishing high school, I completed my undergraduate studies with a Bachelor in Fine Arts in Santiago, Chile, at the Universidad de Chile.
Then, I returned to La Paz, where I began doing a variety of commissioned artistic works and exhibitions, from large-scale murals to book illustrations to cartoon illustration to realistic portraits and landscapes. During the two years prior to moving to Canada, I worked at Highlands International School in La Paz as the art teacher for all grades, from pre-kindergarten to Grade 11.
Since moving here, I have become involved in the art community as a member of the Belleville Art Association (BAA) and the Quinte Arts Council. I like to create a variety of art pieces – from portraits to landscapes to superheroes, in a variety of mediums including acrylics, watercolours, markers, and pastels. My first priority in art is to incorporate my faith in Christ in a realistic manner.
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Ruth, attending a local church of Spanish-speakers, reading, going to see movies, and getting to know the area.
Recently I have been facing a new challenge in my art – peripheral vision loss due to Retinitis pigmentosa. By God’s grace I continue to create!
