Eileen Myers Artist Statement / CV

My work is deeply influenced by the many places I have visited throughout my travels. Whether inspired by historic architecture, landscapes, people, or—most especially—flowers, each subject begins with a strong visual and emotional response. It is that initial impact—how a scene or subject makes me feel—that I strive to capture and translate into my work, preserving a moment in time.

Over the years, I have continually challenged myself to grow as an artist by exploring new subjects and techniques. I often focus on themes, dedicating time to studying and painting specific elements such as trees, water, clouds, still life, or architectural forms. This approach allows me to develop both variety and depth within my practice.

Flowers remain a central and enduring subject in my work. I am drawn to their bold forms and subtle complexities, and I enjoy capturing the interplay of light and shadow, as well as the delicate gradations of colour. Working in oils, I frequently use glazing techniques to build depth and achieve the nuanced effects I seek.

My preferred medium is water-mixable oil paint, which offers the richness and versatility of traditional oils without the need for solvents, allowing for a more environmentally friendly practice. I also enjoy working in watercolour combined with pen and ink—an approach that is particularly well suited to painting outdoors and while travelling, using only a portable sketchbook.

More recently, I have been exploring painted fabric and thread painting, combining my background in art and fashion. This technique involves free-motion stitching on a sewing machine, where the fabric is guided by hand rather than fed automatically. I often incorporate mixed media elements, creating richly textured surfaces and, at times, subtle three-dimensional effects.
